Even a small amount of alcohol destroys deep sleep, the brain’s ability to cleanse itself and recover. This results in fatigue, lack of concentration and over-excitement that need to be ‘reset’. Alcohol is a neurotoxin, and its regular use causes depression and melancholy.
Alcohol interferes with the production of the brain’s natural pleasure hormones, and with prolonged use this leads to a person no longer deriving pleasure and well-being from anything other than alcohol.
When alcohol has become an addiction, life starts to feel gray and joyless. A strong feeling of well-being is triggered only by the thought of the next drink.

Even today, scientists have still not found the alcohol gene, despite their best efforts.
Studies have shown that intelligent people drink more alcohol than less intelligent people. Alcohol puts a strain on the body and you need to be in good shape to cope with it. Indeed, high functioning alcohol addicts are often physically stronger than average, and can tolerate large amounts of alcohol – and can cope with their responsibilities for a lot longer before the problem becomes apparent.
Alcohol addiction is like any other addiction. After all, someone who has stopped smoking is no longer a smoker. When a person no longer uses alcohol and does not crave it, they are not an alcoholic or alcohol dependent. They are simply a FREE soberist.
Rubbish. Research shows that the vast majority of people get sober spontaneously, without physical peer support groups.
Alcohol is proven to be the most dangerous drug in the world, and the second most addictive. Only heroin is more addictive than alcohol. Only those whose bodies cannot tolerate alcohol are safe from alcohol dependence. All others are not.
Alcohol-related studies have been conducted with a purpose in mind, undoubtedly funded by alcohol companies: the sober control group has included people who have become sober because of ill health and people who have been unable to consume alcohol because of ill health. Careful research using reliable scientific methods has found that total abstinence is the healthiest option.
A spiritually present person is interesting, and you can only be truly present when you are sober. People who give nothing of themselves and are not interested in others are boring. This has nothing to do with alcohol consumption.
Alcohol causes depression because it interferes with the brain's natural production of dopamine and destroys the stores of the hormone endorphin. When you are free from alcohol, you gain more joy in your life.
Are you sure this will work for me?

I bought a motorbike on Monday! I used the money that I didn't drink away. And it's nice not to have to think about whether it'll be ready to drive in the morning. Dreams do come true, one at a time.
Now, as a soberist, it's lovely to think about the summer ahead. No wasted days because of a hangover. Summer is too short anyway.
This week, it will be one month. Another weekend without shame or grumpiness. I've fallen in love with a new "sparkling wine" that I drink ice-cold from a large glass: lemon soda. Just wonderful!
